The commercial history of the Erkent family, which is among the oldest traders and weavers of Gaziantep as Balat carpet, dates back 4 generations. In the 1940s, it started to operate in the field of textiles, starting from the first generation, by manufacturing rugs on hand looms. In 1961, it expanded its investments in this field by transforming the textile workshop into a factory, and first a thread dyeing workshop was established in Istanbul and a weaving workshop in Gaziantep. The company name Balat Mensucat was inspired by the BALAT district of Istanbul, where it started its operations, and the Carpet Factory established in Gaziantep was named BALAT and started to operate under this name. In 1964, the company continued its activities as a collective company by registering in the industrial registry and was converted into a joint stock company in 1983. In addition to rug manufacturing, it also produced carpets and yarn from time to time. As Balat Mensucat, it operates in the carpet market, with 50% of its carpet production being exported to the domestic market and the other 50% to more than 40 countries.
